Setting up your loudspeaker
HOW SHOULD I POSITION MY LOUDSPEAKERS?
Loudspeaker placement is a far from exact science – it differs for each room, loudspeaker, and the individual taste of the person setting them up. A good rule of thumb to get you started is to try to form an equilateral triangle between your listening position and the speakers. Vienna Acoustics Concert Grand & Klimt loudspeakers generally work best at least 10” from the rear wall. One important guideline is to try to avoid having the same distance from side walls as to the rear wall , so do not place the speaker 10" from both back and side walls. That said, be sure both left and right speakers are set the same – it is vital each side is symmetrical. When adjusting toe-in, aim for a focus point slightly behind the listening position, and then experiment to get the fine tuning correct. Too accurate a focus on the listening position results in extreme centre focus but diminished soundstage, and too wide will cause the soundstage to open up but the centre focus is compromised. If in doubt, ask your retailer, who will be happy to share their expertise to get the very best from your system.
DO MY LOUDSPEAKERS NEED TO BE “RUN-IN”?
It is always advisable to “run-in” your loudspeakers. This stabilises the mechanical parts of the loudspeaker and you will notice an improvement in sound quality during and after this period. The exact time depends on a number of factors, but one option is to use one of the many commercially available “burn in” discs (your retailer may be able to supply this for you) to speed up the process. Another trick is to place the loudspeakers closely facing each other, with one speaker out of phase (the + and – terminals reversed on the speaker only), and leave them running. Because the speakers are out of phase the actual volume heard is greatly reduced, but the mechanical benefits are the same.
HOW DO I CONNECT MY LOUDSPEAKERS?
Firstly, make sure your amplifier is turned off. Connect the “right” amplifier output to the speaker on the right, and the left output to the speaker on the left. In each cable there is a positive and negative. The positive (+) is usually red, the negative (-) is usually black. Make sure the positive output on the amplifier is connected to the positive input on the loudspeaker, and the negative output on the amplifier is connected to the negative input on the loudspeaker.
